The Quiet Problem

It works when you’re alone. It stops working when it matters. And you haven’t told a single person.

If that sentence landed, you are in the right place. What is happening to you is far more explainable, and far more ordinary, than you have decided it is.

Start with what’s actually happening

Most men tell nobody.

Not their partner. Not their GP. Not the friend they have known since they were eleven and would trust with anything else on earth.

They search at two in the morning and delete the history afterwards, as though the phone might think less of them. If that is roughly where you are, nothing about it makes you unusual. But staying there is the part that makes it worse — because silence does not stay empty. The people around you fill it with the worst available explanation.

The mechanism

Here is the loop you are in.

It has parts. It has an order. It runs the same way in almost every man it happens to — which is the first piece of good news, because a thing with a pattern can be interrupted.

The erectile anxiety cycle, drawn as a tightening spiral Eight stages run clockwise — trigger, fear prediction, body alarm, self-monitoring, pressure behaviour, reduced arousal, shame, and future fear — around a line that spirals inward and tightens toward a knot at the centre. Four marked points on the line show where the cycle can be interrupted: noticing the trigger, naming the prediction, resetting the body, and moving from checking to sensing. trigger fear prediction body alarm self-monitoring pressure behaviour reduced arousal shame future fear 1 2 3 4

  4. body alarm
  5. 2  name the prediction

  8. pressure behaviour
  9. 4  checking to sensing
  10. reduced arousal
  11. shame
  12. future fear
  13. … and round again, tighter

Every point on it is a door. That is the whole of the good news, and it is a great deal more than it sounds.

The four marked points are where it can be interrupted.

Everything you have tried has been a version of trying harder. Trying harder is the engine.

Arousal is not a courtroom witness that can be bullied into giving evidence. It responds to safety, to attention, to absorption — and it stops responding the moment it is put under inspection. It is the same reason you cannot make yourself fall asleep by checking whether you are asleep yet.

Which means the way out is not more effort, more willpower, or one perfect night that proves the problem has gone. It is a different pattern, practised in low-pressure repetition, until your nervous system stops filing intimacy under things that can be failed.

Who is telling you this

I’m John Taylor. I have spent twelve years working with this, and I wrote a book about it because nobody was explaining it properly.

Most of what men find online about erections is either trying to sell them a tablet or trying to sell them a personality. This is neither. It is one problem, looked at closely, by someone who does very little else.

Erection problems that persist can be an early and very treatable signal of something physical — and finding that out is a five-minute conversation rather than a humiliation. This work sits alongside medical care. It does not replace it, and I will say so again if you and I ever speak.

If you would rather not walk in cold, I have written out the exact words to use.
